Brighter Futures is a mental health consortium serving students and their families in Lafayette County. The services we provide were developed to serve youth and families who may lack adequate assistance with:
- Divorce
- Domestic Violence
- Drug and alcohol abuse
- Teen pregnancy
- Child abuse and neglect
- Mental health resources
- Health insurance
Our goal is to equip Lafayette County’s youth with healthy lifestyle tools designed to strengthen the family unit. The Brighter Futures Consortium includes all six Lafayette County public school districts.

The Brighter Futures Consortium was made possible through a generous grant from the Lafayette County Children’s Services Fund. Funding for Brighter Families was provided in whole by the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City.

The Social Skills Group led by Kelly Sears of Sunflower Counseling Services is held bi-monthly in Lafayette C-1 School Districts Counseling Conference room beginning at 4:00 p.m. This group comprised of students aged 12 to 18 who have a formal Pervasive Development Disorder diagnosis work on a variety of social skills such as: conversational and life skills, managing intense emotions, reading social cues, and enhancing over all communication. This group also travels to various locations to practice these new skills. A schedule of meeting times and dates along with the different activities is listed below. Parents and caregivers of these students are encouraged to stay and meet informally. This informal meeting allows parents to connect with others who are facing the same struggles, challenges and joys.
Thursday, September 8 @ 4:00 p.m. is the Back to School Party.
Thursday, September 22 @ 4:00 p.m. students will be working with a social skills workbook (Asperbers... What does it mean to me?)
Thursday, October 6 @ 4:30 - 6 p.m. students will be traveling to laser tag.
Thursday, October 20 @ 4:00 p.m. student will be working with their social skills workbook
Thursday, November 3 @ 4:00 p.m. a field trip will be planned (information forthcoming)
Thursday, November 17 @ 4:00 p.m. social skills workbook.
Thursday, December 1 @ 4:00 Field trip to Pizza Hut
Thursday, December 15 @4:00 is the 4th Annual Christmas Party
